Who is Switchboard Victoria?

Switchboard Victoria is a community-based not-for-profit organisation dedicated to supporting LGBTIQA+ people, their families, allies and communities across Victoria. Their services are built around the idea of peer support, meaning people can speak with trained volunteers and workers who genuinely understand the lived experiences of the LGBTIQA+ community.

For decades, Switchboard has helped connect people to support, resources and community through confidential listening services, referrals and specialised programs designed to improve wellbeing and safety.

Their work plays an important role in ensuring that LGBTIQA+ individuals across Victoria have access to affirming support, inclusive services and safe spaces to seek help when they need it most.

What They Do

Switchboard Victoria runs several services that directly support the community:

Rainbow Door
A free specialist helpline where LGBTIQA+ people can call, text or email trained support workers for advice, information and emotional support. It helps people dealing with issues such as mental health challenges, social isolation, family violence, relationship difficulties or simply needing someone who understands.

QLife Support Service
Switchboard partners in QLife, a national peer-based telephone and web support service for LGBTIQA+ people and those with questions about sexuality, gender or supporting someone in their life.

Community Programs
Switchboard also runs programs that strengthen connection and inclusion in the community. For example, initiatives like Out & About help reduce social isolation by pairing older LGBTIQA+ people with volunteer visitors for companionship and connection.

Across all of their work, Switchboard focuses on support, advocacy, connection and wellbeing for diverse communities throughout Victoria.

Why This Matters

Despite growing awareness and acceptance, many LGBTIQA+ people still face challenges including discrimination, mental health struggles, family rejection and social isolation.
